Overview
About 180km from Chiang Mai, the city northern Thai is known as ‘Siang Hai’ has been marketed in tourist literature as ‘the gateway to the Golden Triangle’. Thais often tout Chiang Rai as a laid-back alternative to Chiang Mai. Things are on a smaller scale here, from the night market to the amount of sites to see but the city has a more relaxed atmosphere, less pollution and its trekking areas are quicker to get to. Although often compared to the north’s capital, Chiang Rai has its own character and attractions, like the unique, sparkling white Wat Rong Khun temple, just outside the city.

Thailand´s northernmost province, Chiang Rai is a major tourism gateway to Myanmar and Laos. Majestic mountains and antiquities attest to Chiang Rai´s prosperous past civilization. It is home to several hill tribes with fascinating ways of life.

Chiang Rai International Airport is located about 10km from the city centre.
 
 
Getting Downtown Chiang Rai
The airport is extremely close to town and it´s generally no more than a 15 minute drive to most city hotels from the airport. Many, if not all, hotels offer a free pick up service but check the charges before you order hotel transportation. However, rented cars and taxis are easily available at the airport.
 
When to Fly to Chiang Rai
Peak Season:
The best time to visit Chiang Rai is in winter (November to February) when the air is cool and refreshing and beautiful flowers are in bloom.
 

Off Season:
It is not advised to travel to Chiang Rai in August or September as the city tends to flood at this time of the year. Monsoon season starts May and ends in October.
