Overview

Istanbul is an old city, historically also known as Byzantium and Constantinople. Here you can see the remains of many ancient civilizations and their culture in harmony with Turkish culture. As a result of such a rich and varied history, Istanbul´s architectural inheritance is second to none. Fine examples are visible throughout the city with stunning Ottoman mosques, classical columns, Byzantine structures, ancient city walls and fine Orthodox churches. The old versus the new, the traditional versus the modern is a conflict a visitor often observes.

Distance from Airport

Istanbul Atatürk International Airport (IST) is located 23km (15 miles) west of central Istanbul, in Yesilköy.

Getting Downtown Istanbul

The Havas Airport bus is perfect for those travelling on a budget. The buses run to Taksim Square, in the centre of the city, taking approximately 30 minutes to make the journey
The city runs a very efficient light railway system, which operates trains to Ataturk Airport at regular times throughout the day. Taxis are a good option for those looking to get to their hotel quickly. A taxi to Taksim should cost around £13. Shared taxis can be found outside of the Arrivals lounge at the International Terminal.

When to Fly to Istanbul

Peak Season:
Istanbul’s tourist season runs from April to the end of October. July and August are the busiest months. If you plan on visiting during these months, it´s recommended to search for flights far in advance.

Off Season:
The shoulder seasons of April through June and September through October have mild weather, fewer tourists and slightly lower hotel prices.
The chill and wetness of winter fends off most visitors but you will find fewer crowds and lower hotel rates.
