| Overview |
Prague, capital of the Czech Republic, is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The year 870, when Prague castle was established, is regarded as the beginning of the city’s existence. However, people inhabited the area in the early Stone Age. In 1918, at the end of World War I, Prague was declared the capital of a new country – the Czechoslovak Republic. In 1993 it became the capital of an independent Czech Republic.
Typical for Prague city centre are its winding lanes and buildings in every possible architectural style: Romanesque rotundas, Gothic cathedrals, Baroque and Renaissance palaces, art nouveau, neo-classical, cubist and functionalist houses and contemporary structures. Undulating topography gives Prague its inimitable beauty and its stunning panoramic views. |

| Distance from Airport |
Praha Ruzyne International Airport is situated about 20km (12.5 miles) northwest of Prague. |
| |
| Getting Downtown Prague |
You can make your way from the airport to your hotel by taxi, airport shuttle bus or city bus.
Cedaz Shuttle minibus services to the city centre (Námìstí Republiky) are provided every half-hour by Cedaz from 6am to 9pm. The shuttle costs 120Kc (£2.85) for the 30-minute trip.
Bus 119 takes passengers from the bus stop at the right of the airport exit to the Dejvická metro station (and back). Tickets are available for purchase from the newspaper stand or the machine in front of the terminal. The bus/metro combo costs only 20Kc (50p) but the bus makes many stops. Travel time is approximately 40 minutes.
Taxis are sometimes unlicensed and unscrupulous and visitors should avoid these. AAA have a good reputation and have air-conditioned cars. Expect to pay about 700Kc to 800Kc (£17-£19) for the 20 or so minutes to the city center. |
