Venice is just as romantic and beautiful as it looks on the travelogues and movies. Grand canals and singing gondoliers provide the backdrop to the romantic city of Venice. Cars are banned, so the only way to get around the 1,500-year-old city is by foot or by water. From these vantage points, you´ll be awed by the magical beauty.
The historic centre is divided into six quarters (sestieri). These are: San Marco, Dorsoduro, San Polo, Santa Croce, Cannaregio and Castello. The city´s main thoroughfare is the Grand Canal that intersects each district as it meanders through the length of Venice from the railway station to San Marco. An alternative to walking the bewildering streets of Venice is to cruise the waterways onboard the motorboat buses known as vaporetti. These are the less romantic but also less expensive substitutes for the famous gondolas.

Marco Polo airport is located just 12km (7 miles) from Venice and is the main hub of European and National flights to this region.

Buses leave from the airport about every hour, cost 3€ and make the trip in about 20 minutes. The slightly less expensive, twice-hourly local public ACTV bus no. 5 costs 1.50€ and takes 30 to 45 minutes. Buy tickets either at the newsstand just inside the terminal from the sign posted bus stop. With either bus, you´ll have to walk from the final stop at Piazzale Roma to the nearby vaporetto (water bus) stop for the final connection to your hotel.

A land taxi from the airport to the Piazzale Roma (where you get the vaporetto) will run about 30€

The most fashionable and traditional way to arrive in Piazza San Marco is by sea. For 12€ the Cooperative San Marco/Alilaguna operates a large motoscafo (shuttle boat) service from the airport with two stops at Murano and the Lido before arriving after about 1 hour in Piazza San Marco.

Peak Season:
Venice has visitors year-round and the busiest time is April to October, especially the periods from Easter to June and September through October. Christmas, New Year and Carnevale (February) are also very busy. If you plan on visiting during these times, make reservations in advance.

Early spring may be the best time to visit. September has the next best weather but October has fewer crowds.
